Your Step-by-Step
Roofing Process
Replacing your roof is a major investment, and knowing what to expect makes all the difference. This guide walks you through each step of our roofing process, from delivery to final cleanup, so you know exactly what happens when you choose Northside.
Step 1:
Material Delivery
Materials are typically delivered between 8:00 and 8:30 am by one of our trusted suppliers. The delivery may be placed on the ground near your home, or lifted directly onto the roof, depending on access and project needs.
Delivery Methods:
Ground Delivery:
- Materials are placed on the driveway or yard
- Our crew will carry them up to the roof as needed
Roof Delivery:
- Materials are lifted directly onto the roof
- This allows the crew to begin work faster
Step 2:
Dumpster Placement
Around 8:30-9:00 am, a dumpster will be delivered to the property, unless otherwise discussed with your project manager.
What it’s for:
- Collects all roofing debris
- Keeps the jobsite clean and organized
- Allows for safe and efficient tear-off
After the job:
- The dumpster is removed promptly
- Final cleanup is performed
Step 3:
Roof Tear-Off
Before removing the old roof, we protect your property.
Protection Setup:
- Tarps are placed from the roofline to the ground
- Landscaping and siding are protected
- Debris is directed safely into the dumpster
Tear-Off Process Begins:
- Old shingles and materials are removed
- The roof deck is exposed for inspection
Step 4:
Replace Damaged Roof Decking
If damaged or rotting plywood is found after the tear-off, it will be replaced before we install new roofing materials. This ensures your new roof has a strong, secure foundation.
Why This Step Matters:
- Helps prevent future leaks
- Protects the structural integrity of your roof
- Ensures proper shingle installation
- Required for most manufacturer warranties
Steps 5 & 6:
Ice & Water Shield, and Roof Deck Protection
Ice & Water Shield
A thick self-adhering membrane is installed in vulnerable areas such as valleys or eaves.
Roof Deck Protection
A synthetic or felt underlayment that goes over plywood decking to create a secondary moisture barrier.
Together, they act as a backup defense system to keep leaks from reaching the wood deck and interior of a home.
Step 7:
Shingles
Shingles are the main outer layer of the roof. Their job is to shed water, protect the underlayment and decking from UV exposure, and defend against wind and weather.
Shingles are installed from the bottom edge of the roof in overlapping rows, so water naturally runs down and off without getting underneath.
There are many shingle color options available; sample boards of colors can be dropped off or viewed at our office.
Step 8:
Ridge Vents
These are installed along the peak of the roof to let hot, moist attic air escape, helping regulate temperatures and prevent moisture buildup that can lead to mold or premature shingle aging.
Step 9:
Ridge Caps
Ridge caps are specially designed shingles that go over the ridge vent or ridge line to seal and protect the peak from wind and water while giving the roof a clean, finished look.
Step 10:
Clean Up & Final
Walk-through
Once your job is finished, all materials will be picked up, and the dumpster will be pulled. Lastly, a final walkthrough will be done by your crew lead.
